Description

The 14th Spanish Congress of Biogeography, and the 4th Ibero-American Congress on Biogeography, to be held in Barcelona from 8 to 10 June 2026, is once again being organised by the Universities of Barcelona and Girona, specifically by their respective departments of Physical Geography, as was the case with the 1st Spanish Congress on Biogeography held in Vall de Núria from 24 to 28 September 2000.
This congress, therefore, brings one phase – one cycle – to a close, whilst also marking the start of a new one, in which biogeographical research at Spanish universities has become firmly established and consolidated over the course of this quarter of a century; we believe this is now a permanent state of affairs. This was not always the case, and it is worth taking a brief look back at history, summarising briefly where we have come from, so that the new generations joining the field of biogeography may understand its origins and history; for, as Raimon, the singer-songwriter from Xàtiva, says: «qui perd els orígens perd la identitat».
