A la figura de Francesc Xavier Llorens i Barba l’embolcalla un halo especial. Un aire entre mític i misteriós. El poeta Joan Maragall, l’any 1901, va proclamar allò de “[A Llorens i Barba] Le veneramos tanto y le conocemos tan poco”. Més tard, Eugeni d’Ors diria que el filòsof de Vilafranca del Penedès era “per a les noves generacions de Catalunya, un torbador enigma”. I pocs anys després, Rovira i Virgili constataria que “hi ha una desproporció entre els mèrits de Llorenç i Barba i la coneixença que es té de la seva vida i de la seva obra”. Intuïm que Llorens i Barba és un nom especial de la història del pensament català, però encara avui ens costa saber dir exactament per què. Fa anys que ens trobem en aquesta situació. En resum, en sabem poc, però li atribuïm molt.
