Perpinyà i Girona, avui: la llengua, la literatura brings together the papers arising from two seminars held in Perpignan and Girona in 2024, as part of the project ‘Cross-border Catalan Studies: from Perpignan to Girona and vice versa’. Drawing on sociolinguistic, dialectal, toponymic, literary and institutional perspectives, the volume provides an overview of the current state of affairs in Northern Catalonia and the cultural relations that span the border.
The studies brought together here take as their starting point a territory that is both shared and fragmented: the cross-border Catalan space. Within it, we find analyses of the socio-economic and linguistic reality, reflections on the teaching and promotion of Catalan, explorations of dialectal variation and northern place-names, and interpretations of figures and discourses in northern Catalan literature. The book neither idealises nor glosses over the border: it places it at the centre in order to understand what separates, what connects, and what can still be built between Perpignan and Girona.
